Chiropractic Treatment Before Spine Surgery for Chronic Lower Back Pain

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Health Plan has adopted landmark guidelines for the management of chronic low back pain. As of Jan. 1, 2012, candidates for spine surgery must try and fail a three-month course of conservative management (including physical therapy, chiropractic therapy and medication) before receiving authorization determining the medical necessity of surgery. This, together with the plan’s Lower Back Pain health coaching program, is the first reported implementation of such a policy by a health care plan.
