Health Insurers on Premiums

Despite projections made by the Obama Administration regarding lower insurance costs and premiums in 2014, insurers are warning their brokers that many individuals and small businesses will see significant impacts in the coming year. While a 2009 analysis by the Congressional Budget Office shows that care will be “more affordable and accessible,” Jeff Alter of United Health Group, the largest carrier in the country, said that some businesses could see up to a 116% premium increase.

These increases are not only due to the insurance overhaul, but also to increasing health care costs. Skewed projections also don’t take into account many of the more dicey aspects of the law’s provisions as well as government subsidies.
