Chiropractic Care Relieves Neck Pain for Baltimore Oriole, Nolan Reimold

Thanks to chiropractic care, neck spasms didn't knock Nolan Reimold off his game. After missing only one outing, the Baltimore Orioles left fielder was back in the starting lineup Friday April 20, 2012.

Reimold said he felt a grabbing pain after Wednesday's game, and then woke up Thursday morning and couldn't move his neck from side to side. He received treatment on Thursday in Chicago and then visited a chiropractor on Friday morning in California. Reimold took swings in the afternoon and declared himself ready to play.

"(The chiropractor) worked on it, got adjusted and then I came to the field and the trainers worked on it and loosened it up," Reimold said. "And I swung in the cage and I felt pretty good, so I'm playing."

It has been reported that the prevalence of neck pain in office workers is much higher than in the general population. The costs to the worker, employer and society associated with work-related neck pain are known to be considerable and are escalating. In the general population, neck pain and dysfunction are common, affecting up to 67% of the general population at some time during their life.*

According to a January 3, 2012 article in The New York Times, A new study is one of the few head-to-head comparisons of various treatments for neck pain, a problem that affects three quarters of Americans at some point in their lives but has no proven, first-line treatment. While many people seek out spinal manipulation by chiropractors, the evidence supporting its usefulness has been limited at best.

But the new research, published in The Annals of Internal Medicine, found that chiropractic care or simple exercises done at home were better at reducing pain than taking medications like aspirin, ibuprofen or narcotics.
